ON THE INCLUSION OF SHAMIL BASAYEV IN THE UN'S ANTITERRORIST LIST

PRESS RELEASE

On August 8 the Russian Federation and the United States jointly entered the name of Shamil Basayev in the Consolidated List of the UN Security Council's Committee on Sanctions against the Taliban, Al-Qaeda and associated with them individuals and entities subject to Resolutions 1267, 1390 and 1455. The United Kingdom also joined in this action.

This move had been preceded on that same day by an official announcement of the US Administration that Shamil Basayev was being qualified as a terrorist and that his assets were to be frozen.

The Russian side has received with satisfaction the decision of the US Administration. We regard this concrete measure taken by our American allies in the antiterrorist coalition as one more step towards the strengthening of global counter-terrorist cooperation and the eradication of the threat of terrorism on the territory of the Chechen Republic.

We hope that this decision, as well as the joint steps in the UNSC Committee on Anti-Taliban Sanctions will contribute to the further strengthening of effective cooperation between our countries within the United Nations.
