On the situation in Sinai peninsula
PRESS RELEASE
According to the incoming information, the military operation against the gunmen, who attacked Egypt's border roadblock on 5 August in Sinai peninsula, continues in Egypt. On 8 August the unknown individuals attacked a number of checkpoints; several Egyptian policemen and military servants. According to the information of mass-media, more than 20 terrorists were killed after the air strike of the Egyptian air forces in the north of the peninsula.
The situation in southern part of Sinai, where resorts are located, remains peaceful. Local authorities take measures for security enhancement; the emergency mode of operation of all government institutions is launched. The number of tourist buses is reduced in order to ensure the necessary escort and protection for all tourist transport. The number of mobile checkpoints near hotels is increased.
We hope that after appliance of counter-terrorist measures being taken by Egypt, which deserve support, the situation in Sinai peninsula will be normalised and the necessary security level will be ensured. In this respect, the MFA of Russia confirms its recommentation for Russian citizens, who travel to Egypt, to be cautious and to abstain from trips outside the resorts in Sinai.
