Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s telephone conversation with Yemeni Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdulmalik Al-Mekhlafi

On August 11, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke over the phone with Yemeni Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdulmalik Al-Mekhlafi at the latter’s initiative.

During the conversation the foreign ministers discussed in detail the difficult situation in the Yemen Arab Republic, including the inter-Yemeni consultations that wrapped up in Kuwait the other day. Mr Lavrov emphasised the need to prevent new clashes and resume these talks in the near future with a view to achieving a comprehensive settlement of the conflict in Yemen – a friendly nation to Russia – that takes into account the views of all the country’s leading political forces. They agreed to continue contacts between Russian and Yemeni officials on these and other issues of common interest in different venues, including the UN.

Mr Al-Mekhlafi expressed gratitude to the Russian Federation for its consistent support for the preservation of Yemen’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, in the interests of resolving the problems in Yemen by peaceful and constitutional means as soon as possible.
