Comment by the Information and Press Department on the terrorist attacks in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

1271-05-07-2016

A series of terrorist attacks rocked Saudi Arabia on July 3 and 4. The attackers detonated explosive devices at the US Consulate in Jeddah, at a Shiite mosque in Qatif in eastern Saudi Arabia, and near the Prophet’s Mosque in the holy city of Medina. According to preliminary information, four Saudi security officers have been killed and five wounded. No one has so far taken responsibility for the attacks, but the Islamic State appears to be the most likely organiser.

We strongly condemn this criminal provocation by radical forces. We express our condolences to the families of the dead and wish a rapid recovery to the wounded.

These terrorist attacks were especially cynical, coming on the eve of one of the most sacred Islamic holidays, Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Moscow reaffirms its principled support for waging an uncompromising fight, without double standards, against the global threat of terrorism and for fostering broad international cooperation towards this end. We are prepared to continue to work towards this, including through closer coordination of consistent counterterrorist efforts with Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region and beyond.
