Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s video address to the participants of an open conference held within the framework of the General Assembly of the Italian-Russian Chamber of Commerce, September 21, 2021
Ladies and gentlemen,
I am delighted to have this opportunity to address the participants of a conference held within the framework of the annual meeting of the General Assembly of the Italian-Russian Chamber of Commerce.
The coronavirus pandemic has led to a dramatic decline in the global economy, disrupted economic ties and industrial and logistic links, and increased the rate of unemployment. The situation has been further complicated by the active use of illegal unilateral economic sanctions by some Western countries.
In these circumstances, it is extremely important to join forces in search of new growth points so as to overcome the general decline and return national economies to a sustainable development trajectory.
I am convinced that time-tested Russian-Italian cooperation can contribute to these common efforts. Our enthusiasm is inspired by the fact that the Italian Government led by Mario Draghi is set to promote our cooperation. We are maintaining fruitful contacts between our parliaments, ministries and agencies. We are implementing an ambitious programme of cultural events. We hope that the upcoming session this year of the Russian-Italian Council on Economic, Industrial and Financial Cooperation, which is co-chaired by my colleague, Luigi Di Maio, will give a powerful boost to our practical bilateral cooperation.
It is notable that the Italian business community is interested in increasing its presence in Russia. Proof of this is the Italian companies’ high level of activity at the Innoprom International Trade Fair, held in Yekaterinburg on July 5-8, where Italy became the first European country to receive the status of partner country. We appreciate this trend. For our part, we will continue to do everything necessary to create comfortable and favourable conditions for the successful operation of foreign businesses in Russia, especially as Russia has become a land of opportunity.
I would like to point out a substantial longstanding contribution of the Italian-Russian Chamber of Commerce to the deepening and expansion of our bilateral trade and economic ties. The Chamber has always been at the forefront of our business interaction. It is contributing in every way possible to the build-up of our scientific and technical cooperation and the implementation of major projects in the mechanical engineering, automobile, chemical, light and food industries. It is also doing a great deal to facilitate the implementation of various cultural, humanitarian and educational initiatives.
I would like to wish health, prosperity and every success to you all in your highly important activities aimed at strengthening Russian-Italian relations.
