Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks during talks with Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Mekdad, Moscow, December 17, 2020
Mr Minister, my dear Faisal,
We are glad to welcome your delegation to Moscow. I would like to convey my condolences on Walid Muallem’s passing. He made a significant personal contribution to strengthening our relations and friendship. I hope that with you as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Syrian Arab Republic, we will be able to progress, continue and succeed in developing cooperation.
Your visit continues the series of intense contacts between our countries in various areas that we have seen over the last several months. In September 2020, we visited Damascus and held extensive talks as part of the interagency delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Yury Borisov.
Minister of Presidential Affairs Mansour Fadlallah Azzam once again visited Russia. He became the new co-chair of the Permanent Russian-Syrian Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.
Interdepartmental delegations on promoting the Syrian settlement process, led by a good friend of yours, Special Presidential Envoy for Syria, Ambassador-at-Large Alexander Lavrentyev, visit to Damascus regularly.
We stay in close touch on humanitarian issues, which require cooperation between our governments in culture, education and in solving the problems of people facing adversity.
Your visit gives us a good opportunity to look at the current state of affairs in all areas our cooperation. We have discussed the implementation of agreements between the Russian and Syrian presidents and will take additional measures if it is necessary for the processes to move forward without delay.
Today’s agenda has been set. It is full and covers bilateral and international affairs. I am sure that our work will be useful.
