Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s telephone conversation with Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain Arancha González Laya
On November 23, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke by phone with Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain Arancha González Laya.
The parties expressed their desire to further cooperate under the bilateral Declaration on Strategic Partnership signed in March 2009. They expressed interest in promoting and deepening the political dialogue. In the context of discussing economic issues, the Ministers agreed to assist in holding the next session of the Russian-Spanish Intergovernmental Commission as soon as possible. The parties also discussed prospects for improving the legal framework and expanding contacts in the fields of education, science and culture.
Both parties stated that they value cooperation in confronting international terrorism and organised crime, in which there is an active dialogue in the bilateral interagency working group to counteract new challenges and threats, and an extensive exchange of mutual legal assistance has been established.
During a discussion of items related to the UN, OSCE, and Council of Europe, special attention was paid to the practice of mutual support for candidates for leadership positions in these organisations.
The foreign ministers discussed the situation in Libya, calling for a settlement through a broad national dialogue involving all regions and political groups in the country with support from the UN and the international community as a whole.
