Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s telephone conversation with Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi
On November 23, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Ayman Safadi upon the initiative of the Jordanian side.
Sergey Lavrov informed his colleague at the latter’s request about the mediation efforts Russia has made to reach a complete ceasefire and stop all hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict area since November 10. The Jordanian Minister welcomed Russia’s crucial role in creating the conditions for a ceasefire and a transition to a long-term settlement.
The officials exchanged opinions on key aspects of the regional agenda. They reaffirmed the unacceptability of unilateral approaches and the need to create conditions for the resumption of a direct Palestinian-Israeli dialogue based on UN decisions and the Arab Peace Initiative as soon as possible.
The ministers discussed the developments in and around Syria, including in the context of the International Conference on Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons held in Damascus on November 11-12. They stressed the principled position that there is no alternative to a political settlement in Syria on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the decisions of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress held in Sochi.
They also addressed topical issues related to further developing Russian-Jordanian business contacts with a focus on implementing the decisions of the Fifth Meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation held in Amman on November 13-14, 2019. The ministers reaffirmed their mutual commitment to maintaining a high level of political cooperation.
