Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s telephone conversation with Foreign Minister of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria Sabri Boukadoum
On November 20, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke by telephone with Foreign Minister of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria Sabri Boukadoum.
The foreign ministers compared notes on key issues on the bilateral agenda and discussed further steps to strengthen foreign policy coordination.
Regarding the tensions in Western Sahara, Sergey Lavrov stressed that it is important for the parties involved to exercise restraint, respect the ceasefire and resume the negotiation process under the auspices of the UN to achieve a sustainable settlement of this long-standing conflict based on the fundamental principles and norms of international law, including the relevant resolutions of the UN and its Security Council.
The ministers also exchanged views on the Libyan settlement process, stressing the need to help create the conditions for Libyans themselves to reach mutually acceptable agreements on restoring their country’s destroyed statehood and a national consensus on ways to further develop it.
Both sides underscored the need to step up the international community’s efforts to resume direct Palestinian-Israeli talks in order to advance the Middle East peace process on a universally recognised international legal basis.
