Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s talks with Yemeni Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdulmalik Al-Mekhlafi
On January 22, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Republic of Yemen Abdulmalik Al-Mekhlafi, who is on a working visit to Moscow.
The two diplomats focused on the military, political and humanitarian developments in Yemen, where a devastating armed conflict with the participation of the Arab coalition has been waged since 2015. They stated the need to urgently stop the military fratricidal conflict on the Yemeni land and to adopt measures to relieve the plight of civilians in Yemen who are facing a lack of food and medications due to the armed conflict and the severe epidemiological situation.
Sergey Lavrov emphasised Russia’s principled stance in favour of settling the accumulated problems in Yemen via negotiations and a wide national dialogue that should take into account the interests of all key forces in the country. Russia will continue to take an active part in facilitating the process, and will continue to provide necessary humanitarian aid to the civilian population in Yemen.
Following the talks, the foreign ministers voiced mutual interest in restoring the mutually beneficial, long-standing relations between Russia and Yemen in the trade, economic, humanitarian and other areas in full as soon as the situation in Yemen is normalised and stable.
