Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s telephone conversation with US Secretary of State John Kerry
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State John Kerry on August 24. The conversation was at the United States’ initiative.
Mr Lavrov and Mr Kerry discussed the situation in Syria, including in Aleppo, where government forces are carrying out a humanitarian operation with Russian military support, as well as possibilities for coordinating Russian and US efforts to combat terrorism, building on earlier agreements, including the need to draw a clear line between pro-American Syrian opposition groups and terrorist groups using them as cover, and to whom the ceasefire provisions do not apply.
Mr Lavrov and Mr Kerry also discussed issues relating to Ukraine. Mr Lavrov called on the United States to use its influence in Kiev to caution the Ukrainian authorities against provocation and encourage them to enter into dialogue with the Donbass region and implement the measures and obligations agreed upon through the Minsk Agreements and the Normandy format meetings.
