On June 4, a multilateral teleconference was held on the Middle East peace process at the initiative of the Palestinian side. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin attended the event along with EU Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process Susanna Terstal, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov, and Secretary General of the PLO Executive Committee and member of the Fatah Central Committee Saeb Erekat.

The participants focused on the current developments in Palestinian-Israeli relations. They underscored the importance of resuming direct Palestinian-Israeli talks, without preconditions, under international auspices in order to work out a fair and lasting Middle East settlement. They expressed shared concerns about Israel’s plans to annex part of the territories of the West Bank of the Jordan River, which run counter to the basic principles of the universally recognised international legal framework for the Middle East peace process, as recorded in the UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative, and which would effectively rule out any prospect for establishing a viable and contiguous Palestinian state.
