Press release on video consultations between Russia, Afghanistan and the United States
On June 15, Russia, the United States and Afghanistan held trilateral consultations via video conference at the initiative of acting Afghan Foreign Minister Haneef Atmar. The Russian side was represented by Special Presidential Representative for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov.
The participants discussed the preparations for direct intra-Afghan talks. Russia and the United States welcomed the Afghan government’s intention to complete the process of releasing 5,000 Taliban in the coming days.
The parties also noted the need to reduce violence as a confidence-building measure and underscored that a universal and lasting ceasefire should be one of the key topics on the agenda of the intra-Afghan talks.
Haneef Atmar specifically emphasised the importance of expanding the Russia-US-China trilateral format through involving major regional and international actors in resolving the situation in Afghanistan.
