Press release on marking Africa Day
On May 25, St Petersburg hosted a reception on behalf of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the occasion of Africa Day on the sidelines of the 22nd St Petersburg International Economic Forum. Among the guests were President of the Central African Republic Faustin Touadera, speakers of parliaments and members of governments of several African countries, a delegation of the African Union and ambassadors of African states accredited in Russia. On the part of Russia, representatives of various ministries and academic, business and public circles attended.
At the request of Mr Lavrov, Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov spoke at the reception and read out President of Russia Vladimir Putin’s greetings to the African heads of state and government. He also praised the consolidated efforts of the African community to set Africa on the path of stable development. As a result of these efforts, the African continent holds a stronger position in international affairs and has achieved success in the social and economic fields. In this connection, Mr Bogdanov reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to dynamic work to expand traditionally friendly relations with African partners, both on a bilateral basis and in various multilateral formats.
