Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with African foreign ministers
On October 23 in Sochi, the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation met with heads of foreign affairs agencies from more than 45 African countries participating in the Russia-Africa Summit and Economic Forum, during a working breakfast.
In his welcoming remarks, Sergey Lavrov noted that this historic summit taking place in Sochi will open up a new page in the traditionally friendly Russian-African relations and make a significant contribution to strengthening the architecture of mutually beneficial ties, as well as determine the mechanisms for further advancement.
The participants exchanged views, specifically emphasising the need to strengthen Russian-African cooperation in the political, trade, economic, humanitarian and security fields. They reaffirmed a general commitment to the fundamental principle of “African solutions to African problems” with broad constructive support from the international community.
During the meeting, Sergey Lavrov signed the following bilateral documents:
- Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau on Visa-Free Travel for Holders of Diplomatic or Service Passports;
- Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Zambia on Visa-Free Travel for Holders of Diplomatic Passports;
- Memorandum of Understanding between the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya on Consultations;
- Memorandum on Consultations between the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan.
