Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks at talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono, New York, September 18, 2017
Mr Minister, colleagues,
We are glad to have an opportunity to meet in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. We are meeting soon after our leaders, President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, held important talks on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok. The talks were very constructive, trust-based and productive. More than fifty agreements were signed, including the Convention between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of Japan on the Elimination of Double Taxation with Respect to Income Tax and the Prevention of Tax Evasion. The leaders approved five projects as part of joint business activities on the southern Kuril Islands. They reached agreement on the next Japanese business mission and on creating two related working groups to promote a joint business project.
Of course, the exchange of views between President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on international relations, including security problems in our common region, was very useful.
We think that the ongoing dialogue between Russia and Japan on security in Northeast Asia is highly topical, primarily in connection with the critical situation emerging on the Korean Peninsula.
Today’s opportunity to exchange views on these and other issues is all the more valuable for that.

We are committed to the agreements reached during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Japan in December 2016. We look forward to seeing you in Russia in late November for foreign ministerial talks and for participation in the meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation, which you co-chair together with Igor Shuvalov. The weather will be cool but the reception will be warm.
