Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks at talks with the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, Moscow, June 8, 2017

Mr de Mistura,

We are glad to have another opportunity to continue our regular contacts in searching for the best ways of reaching a settlement in Syria. We are now at a very important stage of this process. I think the main goal is to make sure that all efforts by everyone involved, both inside and outside Syria, are well-orchestrated and aimed at ensuring the sovereignty of the Syrian state, the rights of  its ethnic and religious groups and the region’s security, and at preventing Syria from becoming a permanent source of terrorism.

Naturally, the processes launched in Astana and Geneva in the past supplement each other. We appreciate the coordination established between the initiators of the Astana process and your team.

So we know what to discuss. Thank you very much for accepting our invitation to hold today’s meeting in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later at the Defence Ministry.
