Press release on the conference “Aleppo: A city free from terror. New life, new hopes”
On June 14, the United Nations Office in Geneva hosted a conference, “Aleppo: A city free from terror. New life, new hopes.”
The following officials spoke at the conference: Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations Office and other International Organisations in Geneva Alexey Borodavkin; Head of the Centre for Reconciliation of Conflicting Parties in Hmeymim Lt-Gen Vladimir Savchenko, who commanded the centre during the evacuation of people from Aleppo; Maj of Medical Service, Commander of the Special Operations Medical Unit at the 301 Military Clinical Hospital of the Eastern Military District Roman Guzeyev; Russian Defence Ministry envoy to the Geneva-based task forces of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) Colonel Alexander Zorin; Vanessa Beeley (UK), an independent journalist and expert on the White Helmets, who proved their direct link to al-Qaeda; and Marinella Correggia, a representative of the Italian NGO “No War Network”. Department Head of the Centre for Reconciliation of the Conflicting Parties in Aleppo, Maj-Gen Igor Yemelyanov, Aleppo Governor Hussein Diab and residents of the city also took part in the conference via video link-up.
The event evoked much interest. It was attended by diplomats of missions accredited in Geneva, representatives of international organisations, including the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria, NGOs and spokesmen for the Syrian opposition.
A video link with Aleppo was organised as well as with the studio of the Russian National Defence Control Centre that broadcast the conference for the Russian media. The event was covered by journalists and broadcast online.
The Defence Ministry’s documentary “Aleppo – Return to Peaceful Life” drew much interest. It describes how the city is gradually recovering after scoring a victory over terrorists and overcoming numerous difficulties, including inhuman unilateral Western sanctions.
The photo exhibition “Syria: Photo Chronicles of the War” by photo journalists from RT and VGTRK took place on the sidelines of the conference. An issue of Parlamentskaya Gazeta (Parliamentary Newspaper) with relevant photos was distributed among the participants.
We would like to express our gratitude to the Defence Ministry and the Geneva-based centre for ceasefire control in Syria for their assistance in organising this important political and information event.
