Press release on Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov’s consultations with Smail Chergui, African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security
On December 20, Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov held consultations with Smail Chergui, African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, who is in Moscow on a working visit.
The officials exchanged opinions on key issues of the international and regional agenda, with a focus on preventing and breaking up conflicts in Africa, and in particular in Libya, the Sahara-Sahel region, the Horn of Africa and the African Great Lakes region. They emphasised the importance of consolidating the efforts of Africans and the world community in the fight against terrorism and cross-border crime.
During the consultations, the parties also discussed specific areas for further practical cooperation within the Russia-African Union format, on a mutually beneficial basis and in the interests of ensuring stability in Africa.
