Press release on acceptance of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement
On April 22, Russia submitted a document to WTO Director-General Roberto Azevedo on joining the Protocol of Amendment to the Marrakesh Agreement Establishing the World Trade Organisation.
The protocol envisages inserting the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) into the Marrakesh Agreement Establishing the World Trade Organisation. The TFA is designed to speed up the flow and production of goods, streamline customs procedures, increase their transparency, clarity and efficiency, and reduce trade costs in general.
Russia took active part in the talks on the Trade Facilitation Agreement after it joined the WTO in August 2012. The Russian delegation’s contribution to reaching final consensus around the agreement and its approval by WTO member states at the 9th WTO Ministerial Conference, held in December 2013 in Indonesia was significant.
By fulfilling its commitments for the adoption of the Protocol of Amendment to the Marrakesh Agreement, Russia reaffirmed its adherence to WTO goals and principles. We intend to cooperate with members of this representative forum and use balanced and pragmatic approaches to further assist the successful promotion of multilateral trade talks and strengthen the multilateral trade system.
