Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s talks with Foreign Minister Mohamed Siala of Libya’s Government of National Accord
On December 12, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks with Foreign Minister Mohamed Siala of Libya’s Government of National Accord, who is in Moscow on a working visit.
The attention was focused on the developments in Libya and prospects of the intra-Libyan settlement in the context of the Action Plan for Libya, which was proposed by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya Ghassan Salamé.
Russia stressed the need to continue the broad national dialogue with representatives of main political groups, tribes and regions in order to reach mutually acceptable solutions to provide for the sustainable development of Libya as a united, sovereign and independent state. Russia also reaffirmed readiness to further promote the political process in Libya under the auspices of the UN and in contact with all Libyan parties.
Discussing a number of practical aspects of bilateral Russian-Libyan relations, the officials noted mutual interest in restoring full-scale trade and economic ties when the situation stabilises in Libya.
Mr Siala praised Russia’s role in promoting the crisis settlement in Libya and reaffirmed that the Government of National Accord was ready to maintain close interaction with Russia in various areas.
Mr Siala also promised to take all measures necessary to secure the release of two Russian sailors, members of the international crew of the Temeteron tanker, held prisoner in Libya since June 2016, as well as to return to the owner the Russian dry-cargo ship Merle detained by the Libyan coast guard in March.
