On December 7, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on the sidelines of an OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in Vienna.

The officials discussed further steps to overcome the civil conflict in Syria through an ongoing process of negotiation, with the participation of all Syrian political forces, and held within the framework of the Geneva process and the upcoming National Dialogue Congress in Sochi, while completing the elimination of international terrorist groups. Mr Lavrov stressed that only the Syrians themselves had the right to determine their own future. Syria’s state sovereignty and territorial integrity must be strictly observed.

In addressing the situation in eastern Ukraine, the Russian side noted that there was no alternative to the Minsk Agreements of February 12, 2015. The need for the Kiev authorities to comply, in good faith, with their provisions was reiterated.

The Russian and US foreign policy leaders agreed that North Korea must strictly adhere to UN Security Council resolutions. In this context, Mr Lavrov once again stressed the inadmissibility of actions that could cause an escalation of tensions, such as US military preparations near the Korean Peninsula, as well as aggressive rhetoric, and called for a resumption of focused efforts to resolve the nuclear problem on the Korean Peninsula solely by diplomatic means.

Touching on a number of issues on the bilateral agenda, Mr Lavrov pointed out the unacceptability of pressure on Russian media outlets and diplomats in the United States, including recruitment attempts by US intelligence agencies.
