The Minister’s meetings
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at an MC-21 airliner presentation, Jakarta, August 9, 2017
Mr Budi Karya Sumadi,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today’s presentation of the MC-21, Russia’s newest passenger airliner, in Jakarta is a very important step in implementing our agreements to promote mutually beneficial economic cooperation between Russia and Indonesia, reached by President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of Indonesia Joko Widodo during their May 2016 talks in Sochi.
The airplane that is being presented today embodies the progress achieved by the Russian aircraft industry in recent years. It was created with unique innovations in engine design, electronics, composite materials and 3D printing. Experts believe that this aircraft is not only on par with the latest versions of similar foreign models, but is even better in a number of ways.
Russia hopes that the MC-21 airliner will be popular in Indonesia’s vibrant air travel market, offering the best solution for ensuring reliable transport connectivity on the Indonesian archipelago islands.
Let me note that the manufacturer of this aircraft, Irkut Corporation, is not only ready to supply Indonesia with this model, but also to establish multi-faceted scientific-technical and industrial cooperation with their Indonesian partners. For instance, a regional maintenance centre could be built here to provide repair and maintenance services for these aircraft.
I would like to emphasise that the MC-21 is in short supply. It is currently successfully undergoing flight tests, while contracts for the delivery of 175 aircraft have already been signed, with pre-orders exceeding 250 units.
Let me assure you that cooperation with Russia for our Indonesian partners will always be free of politics, and will be pragmatic and based on a balance of interests of Russian and Indonesian partners.
I wish every success and all the best to the participants in this presentation.
