On August 17, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks with the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is in Russia on a working visit.

Pressing issues concerning the development of bilateral ties between Russia and Iran were discussed at length, with emphasis on boosting practical cooperation in the most promising areas in line with bilateral agreements approved at the top level.

The ministers stressed that the signing of a comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear programme in Vienna opens up additional opportunities for deepening multifaceted cooperation between Russia and Iran.

Both sides reaffirmed the similarity of their approaches to stabilising the situation in the Middle East and North Africa. This will allow the two countries to coordinate their efforts more closely, above all in promoting resolutions to the conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Yemen, and in fostering joint efforts against the terrorist threat posed by the Islamic State and other extremist groups.
