PRESS RELEASE

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov on May 7 held a telephone conversation with Amr Moussa, Secretary General of the League of Arab States.

Lavrov informed Moussa of the outcome of the meeting of the Quartet of International Mediators held on May 4 in New York, at which the ways had been considered for overcoming the present impasse in Palestinian-Israeli relations, and laid emphasis on the fact that the international Quartet consisting of Russia, the US, EU and UN had clearly reaffirmed the need for the Palestinian and Israeli sides to implement their obligations in accordance with the provisions of the road map, which remains an unalternative plan for advancing towards peace in the region. Furthermore, a solution of all the key problems concerning a final status of the Palestinian territories should be found in the course of talks between the directly concerned parties with active assistance from the international Quartet.

Moussa highly evaluated the vigorous and consistent efforts of Russian diplomacy in the Middle East sector, and expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the Quartet meeting in New York.

Lavrov and Moussa also discussed ways to stabilize the situation in Iraq, including the idea of convening an international conference, and emphasized that the UN is called upon to play an effective role in this process.
