On December 20, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.  The officials addressed current issues of the Syrian settlement, taking into account the results of the latest round of inter-Syrian talks under UN auspices that ended in Geneva on December 14. The conversation took place against the backdrop of preparations for further meetings in Astana and Geneva, as well as the implementation of the joint Russian, Iranian and Turkish initiative on convening the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi with the aim of facilitating the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

The officials also touched on matters related to the Libyan settlement, reaffirming the need to respect the mediation role of the UN and the African Union.

They also exchanged views on the process of UN reform initiated by Secretary-General Guterres, and expressed their shared opinion on the need to reach balanced agreements based on a broad consensus of all major groups of UN member-states.
