Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)
Press release on the participation of Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Syromolotov in a sideline event of the 60th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs titled “The United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in the Fight against Drugs and Financing of Terrorism: Common Threats and Joint Actions”
On March 13, a special high-level event was held on the sidelines of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs’ 60th session in Vienna. It was titled “The United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in the Fight against Drugs and Financing of Terrorism: Common Threats and Joint Actions.”
Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Syromolotov, who headed the Russian delegation at the event, said that the SCO was an inalienable participant in the fight against the current challenges, including the drug threat. In this context, he called for the development of a SCO counter narcotic segment as soon as possible as the basis for the creation of an effective mechanism to fight the global proliferation of drugs, including from Afghanistan. This is especially important in light of the ineffectiveness of NATO forces and structures fighting drug production in Afghanistan.
The Russian representative provided detailed information about the system of training counternarcotic personnel for Afghanistan and Central Asia at the Russian Interior Ministry institutes and the continued efforts to strengthen this vital counternarcotic component.
He also highlighted the importance of preventing the use of funds gained from drugs for financing terrorism.
