Following a statement by Rashid Alimov, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Secretary-General, on the South China Sea issue published in the Chinese media, we deem it important to make the following comments.
The consolidated position of the SCO countries that reflects the Russian Federation’s official stance was recorded in the press release of the SCO Foreign Ministers’ Council meeting on May 24 in Tashkent.
In particular, the press release said “the Ministers reiterate their countries’ commitment to preserving the principles of law and order at sea that are based on international law, specifically, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Any dispute must be addressed peacefully through amicable negotiations and agreements between the interested parties, outside international agendas and without external interference. In this connection, the ministers called for respecting the provisions of the convention and also the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and the Guidelines for its Implementation.”
