Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s participation in the ministerial meeting of the East Asia Summit and the 22nd Session of the ASEAN Regional Forum on security
On August 6, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov attended a ministerial meeting of the East Asia Summit (EAS) and the 22nd Session of the ASEAN Regional Forum on security (ARF) in Kuala Lumpur.
The EAS ministerial meeting focused on preparations for the forum’s 10th summit (Kuala Lumpur, November 22). The participants discussed further development of wide-ranging cooperation in the framework of this association. A statement on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran's Nuclear Programme was adopted.
In conjunction with China and a number of ASEAN member states, Russia underscored the importance of continuing joint efforts to build a comprehensive, open and transparent architecture of equal and undivided security in the Asia-Pacific Region in the framework of the multilateral dialogue on this subject that has been launched at the EAS.
Discussions in the ARF format confirmed the importance of this platform in addressing the practical issues of ensuring regional security, countering the existing challenges and threats in the Asia-Pacific region, deepening confidence building measures and improving preventive diplomacy mechanisms. The ARF adopted a statement on strengthening cooperation in the protection and conservation of the marine environment, approved a working plan for the secure use of information and communications technology, co-sponsored by Russia, Australia and Malaysia, and approved similar documents on fighting terrorism and transnational crime, as well as on security at sea and emergency relief.
Exchange of opinions was also held on current international and regional issues, among others, countering the threat of international terrorism, primarily the “Islamic State”, the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Yemen and the South China Sea.
