Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks during talks with Foreign Minister of Suriname Yldiz Pollack-Beighle, Paramaribo, July 27, 2019
Spoken in English
Thank you very much for your hospitality. Indeed, this is the first visit in history of a Russian Foreign Minister to Suriname. But you were the first to make history as the first foreign minister of Suriname to visit Russia.
We are approaching a very important anniversary in our relations. I believe we can discuss how we will mark the 45th anniversary of our diplomatic relations.
I also appreciate our regular contacts, because after your visit to Russia two years ago, we met last year on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and had a very good discussion.
This year two historic documents entered into force: The Treaty on Basic Relations, and the Intergovernmental Visa Waiver Agreement, which I am sure will boost people-to-people contacts, tourism and business exchanges, as well as cultural and humanitarian visits.
We highly appreciate our coordination that we continue to develop within the United Nations regarding key issues on the international agenda, where Suriname not only supports many Russian initiatives, but also co-sponsors them.
Thank you once again for the invitation and for your hospitality.
