Misleading social media posts on Russia “blocking UN Security Council resolutions on Myanmar”

  • en-GB1 ru-RU1

Over the past several days a number of articles have been published online alleging that Russia has blocked UN Security Council resolutions on Myanmar. For example, Kavkaz_Novosti news website posted a message to this effect on its Instagram account, citing a Reuters report (https://goo.gl/Bvjiia). At the same time, the Reuters report does not mention any resolutions at all (https://goo.gl/HsQmBt). In this regard, the Foreign Ministry notes that the UN Security Council has not reviewed any draft resolutions on Myanmar in 2017. The situation in Myanmar was discussed at UN Security Council closed meetings in March and in August 2017, but the countries were unable to agree on a joint statement.

The Information and Press Department issued a comment on the aggravated humanitarian situation in Rakhine State in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar on September 3, 2017 http://bit.ly/2vF3mRF

We are closely following the situation in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. We are concerned with reports of continued fighting that has killed civilians and members of the Myanmar Government’s law enforcement agencies, as well as the drastic aggravation of the humanitarian situation in this region of the country.

Russia urges all the involved parties to launch a constructive dialogue as soon as possible for the purpose of normalising the situation in line with the recommendations of the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State chaired by Kofi Annan.
