International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
Comment by the Russian Foreign Ministry on the death of the Red Cross worker in Ukraine
As reported earlier, Laurent DuPasquier, a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), was killed by a shell in Donetsk on 2 October.
Russia expressed outrage over this tragedy and offered condolences to the victim's family and friends.
Yet, although it has been five days, we have not heard any official explanations from Kiev concerning the circumstances of his death. The killing of a member of an influential international humanitarian organisation is being suppressed. We do not see any real action being taken to find and punish the culprits.
Moreover, comments by several international organisations, including the European Union, have conveniently ignored the fact that the ICRC office is located in an area controlled by the self-defence forces, and was therefore shelled by the Ukrainian army. This undermines the authority of these organisations that claim to be objective and unbiased.
We insist on a thorough independent investigation of the tragedy.
Russia again urges Ukraine to stop shelling Donetsk and especially civilian areas.
