The President of Eritrea visited New Year Celebration in Asmara, organized by the Russia’s Embassy

On December 24, a traditional New Year Party in Asmara was organized by the Embassy of the Russian Federation and the Association of Graduates of Soviet and Russian Universities. The festive event was attended by the President of the State of Eritrea H.E. Mr. Isaias Afwerki, Head of the National Police and Security Forces of Eritrea General Simon Ghebredengel, former Minister of Labor Kahsay Ghebrehiwet, Director of the Information and Press Department of the Foreigh Ministry Ambassador Negassi Sengal, as well as Russia’s Ambassador H.E. Dr. Azim Yarakhmedov, Embassy staff and member of the Association.

In his address to the guests of the party, the Chairman of the Association of Graduates of Soviet and Russian Universities Semereab Habte thanked the Embassy for its continuous support of initiatives of the Association and its assistance in organization of various events, expressed appreciation to the Government of Russia for annual granting scholarships to Eritrean students. He also stressed the importance of the position of the Russian Federation concerning Eritrean sanctions dossier, noting the professional work of the Russian Mission to the UN on this issue.

In his welcoming speech the Ambassador of Russia to Eritrea Azim Yarakhmedov stressed underlined the high level of Russian-Eritrean relations, expressed his gratitude to the President of Eritrea Isaias Afwerki for the support of Russian initiatives in the UN as well as Russian candidates for high positions in international organizations. Ambassador noted the identity or similarity of position of Russia and Eritrea in key issues of international agenda.

The Ambassador stressed the importance of the work of the Association of Graduates of Soviet and Russian Universities and its significant contribution to the development of Russian-Eritrean cooperation. At the end of his speech Ambassador Azim Yarakhmedov congratulated everyone with the upcoming New Year and awarded several member of the Association with diplomas and watches for their contribution to the development of Russian-Eritrean relations and preservation of the Russian language in Eritrea. The event was traditionally held in a friendly and cordial atmosphere.
