The celebration of the folk holiday Maslenitsa (so called “a pan-cake week”) was held on March 10, 2016 at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) in Kolkata. It was attended by diplomats and staff members of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Kolkata, members of the different clubs and associations under the RCSC, as well as graduates of the Russian/Soviet universities and invited Russian fellow citizens residing in Kolkata.

The Club of the Russian compatriots with the support of the RCSC prepared the program, which reflected to the history of Maslenitsa and included traditional contests and games. The decoration of the hall with the indispensable straw effigy of Maslenitsa, for which items of the Russian folk art and traditional souvenirs were used as well as folk music and songs, created the festive atmosphere of this holiday.

A theatrical performance and games reflecting the original meaning of Maslenitsa – the cyclicity of life, the succession of seasons and the link between generations – became the central events of the evening. Guests took part in a colorful round dance with ribbons, which were tied to the straw effigy of Maslenitsa, “bid farewell to the winter” playing the “snowballs” made of paper, engaged in a tug-of-war, expressed their sympathy playing the game “Thread the needle” and solemnly carried the effigy to be burned, having organized the “Maslenitsa Train” headed by the entertainer.

The evening continued with the festival of Russian cuisine. The guests appreciated traditional Russian food, such as pan-cakes with different stuffings, kvass, mead and many more. Representative of the CIS countries treated guests to their national dishes.
