Press release on Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov’s meeting with с a group of prominent US experts on international affairs
On September 28, Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov met with a delegation of US political scientists led by former US Ambassador to the United Nations Zalmay Khalilzad and President and CEO of the Washington-based Centre for the National Interest Dimitri Simes.
The discussion focused on the situation in Syria and prospects for Russian-US cooperation in resolving the crisis in this country. Russia’s position, as underscored during the meeting, is that a lasting settlement of the conflict can only be achieved if the political process is led by Syrians themselves and if Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity are invariably respected.
Another issue under discussion was the independence referendum held in the autonomous Kurdistan region in Iraq on September 25. There was unanimous agreement that all disputes between Iraq’s federal authorities and the Kurdish leadership should be resolved on the basis of constructive dialogue that seeks to develop a mutually acceptable formula for co-existence within a unified Iraq.
