Press release on Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov’s meeting with Vice Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya and Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord of Libya Ahmed Omar Maiteeq
On September 15, the Foreign Ministry hosted a meeting between Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Vice Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya and Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord of Libya Ahmed Omar Maiteeq.
The officials focused on developments in Libya and the prospects for a settlement of the protracted political crisis in the country. The Russian side has reaffirmed its strong commitment to a political process based on the imperative of Libya’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. It has also displayed readiness to continue facilitating the successful advancement of an inclusive intra-Libyan dialogue in contact with representatives of all influential political forces in Libya.
They also discussed certain practical items on the bilateral agenda. More specifically, the Russian side called for an early release of the crew of the tanker Temeteron – Captain Vladimir Tekuchev and Chief Officer Sergey Samoilov – detained in Libya since June 2016 and for solving the problem of the Russian cargo ship, the Merle, that remains in the port of Tripoli after its crew returned to Russia in April and May of this year.
