Comments from the Information and Press Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the temporary suspension of the events within the framework of the negotiation process regarding Russia’s joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)
We regret the decision of the OECD Council to "temporarily" suspend the negotiation process with Russia, which was adopted in the wake of the events in Ukraine. We expect that a pragmatic approach to the interaction with Russia, as has characterised dialogue between us lately, will prevail among members of the Organisation.
Our strategy for joining the OECD remains the same. We are ready to continue our dialogue and do not intend to cease internal work according to the agenda for joining the OECD. We believe that co-operation with Russia is beneficial for the Organisation, and for contributing to the reinforcement of its role in international interaction regarding global economic matters, including within the framework of such mechanisms as the G20.
We would also like to acknowledge that this decision (as we understand it) does not affect the participation of Russian experts in different committees of the Organisation, which is not related to the process of our joining it. Furthermore, according to international treaties, Russia is already a rightful participant of the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention and its workgroup, as well as the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency; and interaction within the framework of these bodies must continue.
