ALEXANDER YAKOVENKO, THE OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN OF RUSSIA'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ANSWERS A QUESTION FROM RUSSIAN MEDIA ABOUT OUTCOME OF ARAB LEAGUE FOREIGN MINISTERS COUNCIL SESSION
Unofficial translation from Russian
Question: Please comment on the results of the session of the Foreign Ministers Council of the Arab League.
Answer: Moscow regards positively the outcome of the work of the session of the Foreign Ministers Council of the Arab League, which concluded on November 10 in Cairo. The Arab states took a constructive stand by calling upon Baghdad to accept UN Security Council Resolution 1441, laying emphasis on its provision concerning respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq.
In this context and taking into account our appeal to the Iraqi leadership we hope that the parliament of Iraq, which must go into special session today, will take a decision to cooperate with the United Nations on the basis of UNSC Resolution 1441. This would meet in the first place the interests of the Iraqi people itself, as well as helping to strengthen peace and security in the Gulf area. We are ready to continue our cooperation with Baghdad in the search for politico-diplomatic variants of a solution to the Iraq problem which would ensure in the end a lifting of the sanction regime and the return of Iraq to the international community.
