The 43rd Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on October 18–19. At the suggestion of Uzbekistan, the ministers focused on the development of education in Muslim countries as a way to prevent the radicalisation of young people and to protect them from extremist ideas. The OIC has supported the proposals that have been advanced in this context by Acting President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, including the idea of creating a research centre in Samarkand.

The meeting participants discussed possible OIC support for international efforts to settle conflicts, and also areas of future cooperation in keeping with the decisions taken by the heads of OIC states and governments following their summit in Istanbul, Turkey, in April 2016.

The heads of the attending delegations denounced the US Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, which allows Americans to file lawsuits with local courts against countries suspected of supporting terrorism. They described the bill as an infringement on sovereignty, which is a fundamental principle of international law. The session participants approved a resolution to this effect.

Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry Konstantin Shuvalov, who represented Russia, as an observer state, put forth Russia’s views on the settlement of conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa, in particular Syria, and on ways to deepen friendly relations between Russia and the OIC countries.
