Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova’s reply to a media question about the upcoming Russia-NATO Council meeting
Question: What are the theme and the main issues on the agenda of the upcoming Russia-NATO Council meeting?
Maria Zakharova: As we announced, an agreement was reached following consultations with the alliance to hold a regular meeting of the Russia-NATO Council at the level of permanent representatives in Brussels on July 13.
The participants will focus on the decisions of the July 8-9 NATO summit in Warsaw to continue to build up its military presence on the “eastern flank” and on the consequences of these decisions for European security.
During discussions of other military issues on the agenda, the Russian party plans to initiate a debate on the initiative submitted by our Finnish partners, the so-called Niinisto plan to enhance aviation safety over the Baltic Sea. We will also highlight the risks to strategic stability coming from the ongoing deployment of the US-NATO ballistic missile defence system in Europe.
Other issues we will discuss include the Ukrainian crisis in light of the need for the phased and full implementation of the Minsk Agreements, security in Afghanistan and the threat of regional terrorism.
