PRESS RELEASE

On September 19, at the Russian MFA, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Losyukov had a meeting with Zhang Deguang, the PRC's Ambassador to Russia.

During the talk, held in a frank and confidential atmosphere, the sides discussed the situation obtaining in the world after the tragic acts of terrorism in the United States. They were unanimous in the view that the September 11 events have demonstrated the true face of terrorism, now posing a real threat to international peace and security, economic development and financial stability in the world. Russia and China are convinced that a decisive and effective rebuff to international terrorism is possible only with the pooling of efforts by the whole world community. The struggle with this universal evil will require long and painstaking work with the use of the mechanisms of the UN and its Security Council on the basis of the generally recognized rules of international law.

The talk has confirmed the identity of the basic approaches of the sides to the problem of countering the challenges from international terrorism, and the readiness of Russia and China to build up coordination of their efforts in this direction through all the available channels in accordance with the spirit and letter of the Russian-Chinese Treaty on Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation.
