Russia’s position in reinforcing the legal grounds of world order
ON RUSSIAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS IGOR IVANOV'S TELEPHONE CONVERSATIONS WITH HEADS OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AGENCIES OF THE UNITED STATES, PRC, FRANCE AND MEXICO
Unofficial translation from Russian
On November 6, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov had telephone conversations with the heads of the foreign affairs agencies of the US, PRC, France and Mexico, in the course of which an exchange of views was continued on the draft new resolution of the UN Security Council on Iraq.
The interlocutors agreed that as a result of the intensive work done over the last few weeks a noticeable rapprochement of positions had become evident with regard to the basic provisions of a future decision of the Council. Furthermore, in the course of the active discussions a whole series of anxieties which Russia had expressed were removed. In the first place this applies to the exclusion of the possibility of an automatic use of force.
The ministers agreed to continue intensive consultations so as to remove the remaining differences and thus arrive at agreements opening the way for a politico-diplomatic settlement of the situation.
