Press release on the fifth round of the Russian-Japanese consultations devoted to the development of joint economic activities on the southern Kuril Islands
On April 22, Tokyo hosted the fifth round of the Russian-Japanese consultations at the level of deputy foreign ministers (Igor Morgulov − Takeo Mori) on the development of joint economic activities on the southern Kuril Islands. The Russian delegation also included representatives of federal agencies and the Government of the Sakhalin Region.
At the meeting participants reviewed the implementation of cooperation projects in the five fields approved at the highest level (namely, aquaculture, greenhouses, package tours, wind farms and waste management) with regard to the priority objectives of the social and economic development of the Kuril and Southern Kuril districts of the Sakhalin Region. The creation of a free movement regime between the region and the Japanese Hokkaido Prefecture was also brought up during the discussion.
In order to develop legal aspects of joint economic activities, the parties agreed to create a relevant working group.
The next round of talks will be agreed upon through diplomatic channels.
