Acting Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks at talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry Moscow, May 14, 2018
We are glad to have this opportunity to welcome you to Moscow for the next round of talks in the two-plus-two format between our foreign and defence ministers. Our colleagues the defence ministers will join us later, but now we have an opportunity to compare the views of our foreign policy departments.
Despite a complicated global situation, Russian-Egyptian relations continue to develop consistently. Our bilateral trade is growing. Last year, it increased by over 60 per cent and reached $7 billion. Today we can talk about what else can be done by the foreign ministries of Russia and Egypt to promote our economic, military and technical, cultural and other forms of cooperation. We will discuss the development of our cooperation in international and regional affairs and the contribution of Russia and Egypt to the settlement of crises in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as our fight against terrorism and radicalism.
We are glad to see you once again.
Welcome to Moscow.
I did not expect Egypt to join the policy of containing Russia. But this is normal in sports. We look forward to see the performance of Mohamed Salah and your other outstanding football players. We believe that friendship will win, but let's see what happens in reality.
