On March 7, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov paid a working visit to Maputo and was received by the President of the Republic of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi. Talks were held with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique Jose Pacheco.

During the meetings and discussions, Moscow and Maputo’s mutual commitment to further strengthen traditionally friendly Russian-Mozambican relations was confirmed, including increasing the political dialogue and stepping up the mutually beneficial partnerships in various areas, including surveying and exploration of hydrocarbons, energy, telecommunications, agriculture and personnel training. An important role in the process has been delegated to the Intergovernmental Russia-Mozambique Commission on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation which is scheduled to have its first meeting on April 23-25 in Maputo.

A wide range of issues on the general African agenda was discussed including the challenges of resolving crisis situations on the continent, including on the African Horn, in the Great Lakes area, the Central African Republic and the Sahara-Sahel region. Special emphasis was given to the task of consolidating efforts in the fight against international terrorism and trans-border crime.
