Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks during his meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique Jose Pacheco, Maputo, March 7, 2018
I would like once again to express our delegation’s and my personal appreciation of your hospitality.
We highly appreciate the friendly and time-tested character of our partnership and share the goal to raise it to a strategic level. We maintain a very stable and dynamical political dialogue and contacts, and we coordinate our activities in international organisations. We would like to complement this cooperation with many other forms, primarily trade and economic cooperation. We have agreed to build two very important mechanisms. One is a working group on military-technical cooperation, which held a meeting last year, and next month will see the first meeting of the recently established Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.
In addition, Russian and Mozambican business circles show shared interest in developing new joint projects, which would complement the first steps made in this direction. We hope to further elaborate on them with you and President of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi.
A wide range of projects for intergovernmental agreements are currently in progress. We hope to complete them soon. Undoubtedly, if we advance in all these and other directions, we will create a package of agreements really deserving of a top-level meeting between our two presidents. In this case, such a meeting will certainly take place. Our shared obligation is to make this summit really effective, because if meetings are held just for the sake of seeing each other, our ministry could be disbanded. Joking aside, we are certainly interested in raising our cooperation to a high standard. I am convinced that our talks today will help us advance in this direction.
