Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova on an incident with a Russian tanker off the Libyan coast
On October 6, in Libya’s territorial waters two miles off the port of Zuwarah, a patrol boat of the local coast guard opened fire on the Comoros-flagged Russian tanker GOEAST for refusing to slow down and let a group of customs officers come aboard. As a result, cargo tanks and the engine compartment were damaged. The crew is reportedly unharmed. The vessel was detained on suspicion of smuggling oil products but released a few days later and by now has made a safe return to Malta from which it set out on the above-mentioned trip to Libya.
In the wake of yet another incident with a Russian tanker off the Libyan coast, we once again draw attention to persistent recommendations of the Foreign Ministry to Russian citizens to refrain from visiting Libya and to Russian organisations to refrain from sending their employees there on business missions for safety reasons until the situation in that country returns to normal.
