On September 13, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with German Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Sigmar Gabriel.

Building on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on September 11, the ministers discussed the situation surrounding North Korea. They strongly condemned North Korea’s nuclear missile activity, stressing the need to solve the problems on the Korean Peninsula by political and diplomatic means alone. The ministers exchanged opinions on ways to reduce tensions and build confidence, including the approaches contained in the Russian-Chinese roadmap for resolving the nuclear problem. Mr Lavrov and Mr Gabriel affirmed their strong commitment to comply with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.

They also addressed other issues on the international agenda, including the initiative to establish a UN mission to protect the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine, which Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel discussed during their telephone conversation, and the status of efforts to settle the Syrian crisis.
