On September 12, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met at the Foreign Ministry with Prime Minister of Lebanon Saad Hariri, who is in Russia on a working visit.
Mr Lavrov and Mr Hariri discussed developments in the Middle East, looking particularly at the situation in and around Lebanon. Mr Hariri commended highly Russia’s consistent policy of support for Lebanon’s territorial integrity, unity and sovereignty. Mr Lavrov said that Russia’s position is that Lebanon should address the urgent issues on its national agenda through constructive dialogue between the country’s main political forces and said that external intervention in Lebanese domestic affairs is unacceptable. Both sides stressed the need to continue the decisive fight against the terrorist threat, particularly ISIS, aiming for this organisation’s ultimate elimination.
Mr Lavrov and Mr Hariri also examined a number of current aspects regarding further development of the two countries’ traditionally friendly bilateral relations. They reiterated the mutual desire of Moscow and Beirut to pursue their active and trust-based political dialogue and build up multifaceted cooperation, including in the defence sector, counterterrorist cooperation, trade and economic relations and cultural and humanitarian ties.
