Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks at the talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Al-Hariri, Moscow, September 12, 2017
Mr Prime Minister,
We are happy to see you in Russia again, arriving for your first visit as head of government after being reelected.
We appreciate our close relations and your personal effort to deepen these relations in all areas: in the context of political dialogue, in the economy, defence, security, as well as the humanitarian sphere.
You have a very dense program. Today you will have a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, and Russian President Vladimir Putin will receive you tomorrow.
I am confident that you and your partners will define further strategic goals of partnership at these meetings, and today we have a good opportunity to exchange opinions on regional and international affairs in the context of the threats that still linger on in the region.
We strongly support your Government’s and all Lebanese political forces’ efforts to further stabilise the situation; this meets the interests of all Lebanese citizens without exception.
Undoubtedly, a consolidation of all political forces on a unified platform helps successfully deal with the current threats, primarily terrorist ones. We congratulate the Lebanese on a very effective operation against the ISIS.
I expect a very fruitful exchange of opinions. Your assessments of the situation and the prospects for its development are important to us.
